CHAPTER

TWENTY-FIVE

Janya and Samuel had been tasked with talking to Brian, while DI McMichaels and DS Sanchez spoke to the rest of the family individually. Divide and conquer had been McMichaels' plan, and that seemed to be exactly what he was doing.

They joined Brian in the kitchens, a couple of other members of staff milling around, preparing what looked to be a rather extravagant lunch spread. Just the sight of it made Janya’s stomach grumble. They’d headed out so quickly she’d not had a chance to have breakfast just yet.

“Can I get you some tea?” Brian asked. “I can’t imagine it would have been offered to you by the rest of the family.”

Janya chuckled. “No, it wasn’t,” she said. “Imagine they have other things on their minds at the moment. No harm.”

“Even if they didn’t, believe me, they likely wouldn’t think to,” he said. He made his way over to an urn, threw a couple of tea bags into a couple of mugs, and filled them. It was a stark contrast to the fine china that had been used by the family, but Janya preferred a large cup of tea anyway. It suited her better this way.

Brian handed them both a strong-looking cup of tea which Janya cradled in her hands. The kitchens were cold, the backdoor left open to give the place some ventilation. She could see the garden, the lush green grass, the shed at the very end, the back gate.

“What kind of security do you have on the house?” Janya asked. “That feels like the best place to start.”

Brian thought about it for a moment. “We have CCTV that is in operation across the whole of the outside of the house,” he started. “There are the gates, of course, that have passcodes on them that only the family have access to. If strangers arrive at the gate, they need to be let in by someone inside the house. If they know the code, they can walk straight in.”

“The front door?”

“Lots of locks on the inside for when the family is in,” he replied. “It’s like Fort Knox.”

“And the CCTV,” Janya said. “Are there any spots on the outside of the house that aren’t covered?”

Brian hesitated. She’d stumbled onto something here, she could see it.

“I… I probably shouldn’t say,” he said. “It was at the request of Eliza that…” He trailed off, looking towards the other kitchen staff. “Could you leave us alone for a moment?” he barked. Quick as a flash, the other members of staff disappeared, the sound of chopping, slicing, and sautéing going with them.

Brian waited for a few moments longer, for the doors to finish closing, for the sounds of everyone leaving to die away before he turned his attention back to the two detectives.

“It was at the request of Eliza that the garden and back gate not be covered by the cameras,” he said. “That was three or so years before she disappeared. And we… We never turned them back on. I… I never turned them back on.
